Abstract

This study examines the integration of local cultural and religious values into mathematics learning through the recontextualization of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) with the Acehnese cultural practice of duduk mufakat (consensus-based deliberation) at the elementary school level. The study focuses on how culturally grounded deliberative practices shape classroom interaction patterns and influence students’ mathematical reasoning processes. The research employed a qualitative, design-based research approach involving 28 elementary school students. Data were collected through classroom observations, analysis of students’ work, and interviews, and were analyzed descriptively using the theoretical frameworks of RME and culturally responsive teaching. The findings indicate that the practice of duduk mufakat, rooted in Aceh's cultural context, functions as an interactional structure that guides the exchange of ideas, the comparison of strategies, and the collective verification of mathematical solutions. Repeated group discussions encouraged students to transition from informal representations toward more systematic reasoning, particularly when identifying patterns, generalizing procedures, and jointly checking solution outcomes. The deliberative process also strengthened reflection, as students evaluated alternative strategies and revised solutions based on group consensus supported by mathematical justification. These dynamics contributed to more structured reasoning, communication, and deeper engagement in problem-solving activities. The study confirms that integrating culturally grounded deliberative practices into RME can support meaningful mathematics learning by organizing communication and collaboration patterns that are responsive to students’ cultural contexts.
